The Small Business Website Playbook
Your website has a job.
Actually, it has several jobs. It needs to introduce your business, explain what you do, build trust, answer questions, guide visitors, work beautifully on a phone, and—eventually—convince someone to take action.
No pressure. 😅
For small businesses, a website doesn’t need to be enormous, complicated, or packed with every digital bell and whistle available. It does need to be clear, useful, current, and designed around the people who actually use it.
Welcome to the Small Business Website Playbook.
Start With the Customer, Not the Homepage
One of the easiest website mistakes is starting with, “What do we want to say?”
Try starting with, “What does our customer need to know?”
That small shift changes everything.
A potential customer visiting your website probably has a handful of immediate questions: What do you do? Is it right for me? Can I trust you? How much does it cost? Where are you located? What should I do next?
Your website should make those answers remarkably easy to find.
Nobody should need detective skills, a magnifying glass, and three cups of coffee to understand your business. ☕
Give Every Page a Purpose
Small business websites sometimes grow like junk drawers. A new page gets added here. An old promotion remains over there. There’s a service you stopped offering in 2023 still hanging around because nobody remembers the website password.
Eventually, things get messy.
Every page should have a purpose. Your homepage introduces and directs. Service pages explain and persuade. Your About page builds connection and credibility. Portfolio or testimonial pages provide proof. Your Contact page makes taking the next step easy.
If a page doesn’t help your customer understand, trust, or act, ask why it’s there.
Follow the Essentials
You don’t need 47 website rules taped to your office wall. But there are a few fundamentals worth keeping in your playbook:
- Make navigation obvious. Clever is fun; clear is better.
- Design for mobile first. Your customers are already there. 📱
- Use strong calls to action. Tell people what to do next.
- Keep content current. Outdated information creates doubt.
- Prioritize speed. Beautiful websites aren’t useful if nobody waits for them to load.
- Use real proof. Testimonials, projects, reviews, results, and experience build credibility.
- Check the basics regularly. Forms, links, buttons, hours, contact information, and checkout processes need occasional attention.
That’s the playbook. Simple doesn’t mean effortless, but it does mean focused.
Don’t Forget the Human Part
Good websites aren’t created for algorithms. They’re created for people.
Yes, SEO matters. Keywords matter. Analytics matter. AI search matters. But stuffing a page with awkward phrases just because someone said they’re “good for Google” can make perfectly decent copy sound like it was written by a malfunctioning robot. 🤖
Write clearly. Answer real questions. Use the language your customers use. Organize information so people can scan it quickly and dig deeper when they want more.
Search visibility and good user experience shouldn’t be competing goals. Done well, they support each other.
Your Website Is Part of Your Brand
Your website may be the first meaningful interaction someone has with your business.
Before they call, visit your store, schedule an appointment, request a proposal, or walk through your door, they’ve probably checked you out online.
What did that experience tell them?
A strong website should feel like the business behind it. If your company is warm and approachable, your website should be too. If you’re innovative, professional, creative, precise, adventurous, or delightfully unconventional, visitors should sense that.
Your colors and logo are part of branding. So are your navigation, messaging, photography, buttons, forms, and mobile experience.
Keep Playing
Boise and Treasure Valley businesses don’t need websites that simply exist. They need websites that help their businesses move forward.
Your website isn’t something you finish and forget. Customers change. Technology changes. Search changes. Your business changes.
So revisit it. Test it. Update it. Simplify it.
And occasionally look at your website through the eyes of someone who’s never seen it before.
If they can quickly understand who you are, what you offer, why they should trust you, and what to do next, you’re playing the game pretty well.
